Okay, so I am officially moved. However, I don't have internet access in my new place yet. So....updates are still on hold. Hopefully within a few weeks, I'll be able to post again. Alas, Mal's Cooties will have to wait, too. I didn't have time to write anything up between the packing and moving and tying up loose ends, etc. So, who wants to start somethin? Huh? That's right!
Also, the Red Sox get a major "Well allllriiiiight!" in the style of Wykked Sceptre.

Aw, well, it'll be worth waiting for. I rather enjoy your posts - I was addicted to the books myself as a kid and sometimes I look back and go, "WHY?" Though I know I'll still have my kids read them, because let's face it, they're cool when you're ten and don't realize how unrealistic they are. (And they're better than Bratz or Gossip Girl or whatever.)
So, because of your blog, I have been inspired to read the little BSC Friends Forever series that came after. Since I graduated straight from Babysitters Club to non-fiction, my friends have been aghast to find me hauled up reading about the 17th time these girls have been through the 8th grade. Seriously, the BSC series starts at the beginning of 8th grade! How, I ask? How!? My suspension of disbelief can only go so far. Would it be that hard to age them into 9th grade? I just don't get it....
Okay, done ranting....
oh, I can't WAIT for the next installment!! discovered your blog a few weeks ago and read every single entry, laughing harder than I ever thought possible at work...and I work at a .com company so of course all my co-workers (mostly male) want to know what I am laughing at....alas they tend not to see the humor.....poor deprived boys with no BSC ;)
A List of Things:
*Yay for you! How's your new job going?
*I've never read the one where Mal gets mono. I've read the first 20 or so books in the series, and a bunch of the newer ones, but there's a big chunk of books in the middle that I've never even heard of!
*You could do updates from a public library if there's one near you.
Hey, just posting another encouraging comment. :) I was completely addicted to the BSC books from about 3rd grade until 8th grade, and like half the girls in America who are now in their mid to late twenties, I wanted to form my own baby-sitters club. Now I highly enjoy reading your blog and my old copies, and laughing my head off at all the ridiculousness in the books. And looking at the 13-year-olds at the school where I teach and thinking "no way in hell would I let you care for my kids". And looking at the 2 1/2 yo kids at the daycare where I work and think "Gabbie Perkins calling people by their full names? Whatever". :) So anyway, I love your blog, and keep writing!
You're alive! Hurray. Good luck with the move & all, and keep us posted :) Can't wait for the next entry.
This is sooo funny, I sent it to my sisters - the family joke was always that book when mary-ann cut her hair...whenever we would put our hair up the others would yell "hellooooo JAW"
Hey, happy new house etc! I'm eagerly awaiting the next update, have really loved reading your blog.
Do you fancy starting on the Sweet Valley High books after you've finished the BSC? I think it'd be an awesome read...
You didn't post the new book review when you said you would! That means we can't be friends anymore and I must right a letter naming you my ex-friend!
there's already a sweet valley blog and it's hilarious
www.thedairiburger.com
Hooray for Tiff! All this anticipation is just making me more excited about reading the already-thrilling-I'm-sure Mallory's Cooties entry! Woooo!!!
Is "Mallory's Cooties" actually a book? I've never heard of it! Oh, pleeeeease tell me it's a real book!
P.S. I hope you're getting settled in, and I'm glad your move went well!
The book is Get Well Soon, Mallory! It is the one where Mal gets mono and had to stay in bed for like, three months.
Congrats on the move! I'm excited for the next review. I am seriously tempted to start reading these again, and its all your fault! :)
Margaret,
loved your review of "Are you there God, it's me Margaret" I looooved Judy Blume when I was a kid and this took me way back. Can't wait until you do "Forever" or "Just As Long As We're Together". I plan to dig out my old copies and read them, yay!
I know I'm too excited, but...I'm a dork lol
Hey guys, I know you can all help me out: are there any Nancy Drew blogs? I've read all the entires here, at the Dairi Burger, and at the Goosebumps ones .. and I need more!
So .. Nancy Drew, anyone?
hahahaha okay I get it now. Cooties=mono. Awesome.
I had mono when I was a kid. Good ol' kissing disease. :D
Margaret, I can't find the link to your blog and I really want to stay caught up on all the judy Blume fun. Was wondering if you could post it again?
I think I'm going through BSC recap withdrawal!
no offense to your new home team, but... most boring world series ever.
I HAVE READ THIS WHOLE BLOG IN 2 WEEKS.
I'm pretty sure my work wouldn't be happy to know that.
Hilarious.
ummmmm.... it's britney bitch?
Just another "I LOVE YOUR BLOG" comment. I found it a few months back when it was linked to on the Pop Candy blog on USAToday.com. I really do love reading it. And find myself wondering WHY I loved these books so much. Ahhh, memory lane.
ngrats on the move. Can't wait of the next installment. And - for the record - I agree with Judith. Start on Sweet Valley High after BSC is finished, it would be awesome!
Congratulations! Can't wait for the next one, I miss reading them on Monday morning at work while I eat my cereal.
Start on Sweet Valley High after BSC is finished, it would be awesome!
Awesome Sweet Valley snark here. :D
Okay, so, while we're off-topic pending a new update...here's a topic.
How many of you have first names used in the series - main or minor characters? For those of you who do, are you horrified or happy at the common name? My name (Kara) is the same as some chick who starts wearing a bra and thus becomes a person of note amongst the BSC. I've always been irritated by that. That, and the fact that, who doesn't wear a bra before 8th grade? They act like this is the most unheard of thing. Plus, who gossiped about who did and didn't wear a bra?
Anyway, any other first-name connections out there?
I'm Kara as well. Mauricio, right? Or something like that.
I'm Mary Ann... not the same spelling, but almost. And my last name starts with an S, too. I liked having someone else with my name other than the chick from Gilligan's Island, but I always thought Mary Anne was a boring character. Way too sweet and weepy.
Holy crap, this is a funny blog. I am amazed by how much I remember about a series of books I haven't even glanced at in 15 years now. You rule! I came here from Feministing.com, in case you're curious.
I found your blog through Feministing.com and I am so amused. I wasted far too much of my childhood reading BSC and I've been squeeing about your blog since yesterday.
I think I need to go to the library b/c I randomly remembered something about a famous city skirt. (i probably need to go farther back in your blog to see this).
Love the blog, but... it's Ann M. Martin. Not N. So you should be calling her AMM. :)
Is is just me or is this comments page is descending into that scene from Trainspotting where he sees the baby on the ceiling.
Anyone got any sites to quell the withdrawal? I've totally rinsed out sweet valley and goosebumps already.
emily: that would be in #10, Logan Likes Mary Anne! Claudia and Stacey take MA shopping for the big dance, and they get her that skirt with the cities etc on it.
Love, love love your blog. Can't wait for more! We're quite a demanding bunch, aren't we?
Hey all, I'm a faithful reader of this blog and miss it terribly while Tiff's moving. In fact, I was so desperate for some bloggy goodness, that I just started up a blog of my own: http://tannertwister.blogspot.com/
It's a recap of "Full House" episodes and I know it's not nearly as good as this blog, but it's something to pass the time til Tiff can get back to us with a new book. I figure that most of you who read the BSC books were probably watching FH every week on TGIF in the 90s, so if you want to check it out and give feedback, that'd be freakin sweet.
Hey all looking for more blogs...this is one that recaps all of our beloved Judy Blume tween angst novels...LOVE IT!!! Thanks Margaret :)
http://preteensensations.blogspot.com/
Ashley, I'm looking for a Nancy Drew blog too!
Tiff, Miss you!
Tiff... come back! We want to know about Mal's Cooties!!
Hey Tiff, I love your blog!!
This is going back a while, but I had a thought when you asked about suggestions for BSC-related ranting. It always bothered me in the book "Stacey and the Bad Girls" that all the alleged 'bad' girls happened to sport non-traditional (at the time anyway) fashions eg, gothic, dyed hair, etc. It sucked to grow up in a small town and know that little girl BSC fans all around me were looking at me and mentally equating me with those shoplifting beeyotches, just because I had pink hair or a lip ring or whatever. Martin, you hating ho-bag!
I really miss your writing and hope that you come back soon!
I just started reading your blog today, and instead of doing homework I've been poring through the archives literally all day. I was just reading your (second?) entry on Walking Disaster, and I remember reading that sentence "Us Babysitters Club members ..." and saying to myself, "That's not grammatically correct." I believe I was nine.
Thank you so much for this. It made my day, and I will be addicted to this blog from this day forward.
Your site is so hilarious :D I read every entry last night and I can't wait to read more!!!
Ugh, sorry for repeating myself on last post. The ultimate irony of this is that I am an editor and currently at work.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0439802415/ref=sib_dp_pt/103-5968148-2099858#reader-link
When you have a chance, check out that link...
Seriously... WTF? I'm pissed the BSC are all up to date now. This makes me die a little inside.
Aww, Tiff I wish you well in your endeavours beyond this blog, but seriously - COME BACK SOON! :(
Sooo Tiff... hows about a Thanksgiving update, eh?
I miss this blog so much... it made my week
I miss your delicious snarkiness. Please update!
Geez, have you just given up? There's no way it takes this long.
Yeah, Tiff, I know you're busy and all, but it's November 25th. Your last post was on November 2nd. I'm going through BSC withdrawal!!!!!! Save me!
It's not as though reading a BSC book takes a lot of time...
I love the Blog and maybe, I'm stupid, but why is Ann M Martin called ANM? Shouldn't it be AMM?
I'm confused...
Tiff calls Ann M. Martin ANM because she's Tiff and she's allowed to do such things.
We're just her loyal followers, so we don't question it.
Ok, it's almost DECEMBER!!!! I am dying here!!!!!!!!!!!
Funny how everyone still holds Tiff in such high regard when she's basically abandoned this thing. There's no way it should take this long. I moved while she was moving also. I got my internet set up in a couple of days. There's also wifi cafes and stuff. There's really not an excuse anymore. Just be nice of her to actually show up and give people an update before all her followers give up.
^ Woah, woah... at the end of the day, it's just a blog, right? A bloody good blog, but it's nothing to get personally upset about... she did just move and start a new job, and it was just Thanksgiving, and now Christmas is coming... maybe reading BSC books isn't terribly high on her priority list right now.
I love how so many people are being rude about this.
For all we know Tiff has been crushed under an ice-cream truck and is lying in hospital unable to move her arms, while her mind is screaming "OH MY GOD, I HAVEN'T UPDATED THE BSC BLOG AND PEOPLE ARE PROBABLY KILLING THEMSELVES OVER IT."
I miss you Tiff and I hope you haven't been crushed, but my life will go on!
...Tiff if you are crushed under an ice cream truck, you had better get the ice cream man to post a message on this blog explaining how exactly you got under his truck. . .
But seriously, this is taking a really long time... I recall you moving earlier in the blog, but there was a post less than a month after you said you were moving.
We're praticically up to two months here...
At least tell us whats going on? Please?
If you're not doing it anymore, I'd just like to know so I stop constantly checking for updates
Whoa, whoa, whoa...Calm down, everyone! Tiff's main obligation in life isn't this blog--We don't know how her move's gone and while it sucks that we're not getting any updates it's not the end of the world. That said...Tiff come back, we miss you!!!!
Just another reader hungry for a new installment. I hope everything's okay.
I wish she'd at least explain what's going on and when/if the blog will return. It's frustrating checking it week after week.
Every day. Every.day. I check this. Every day my heart is crushed.
Umm...I think some of you crazy complaining people need to get lives. It's a blog about the freaking Babysitter Club, calm the fuck down.
Seriously. It's not the end of the goddamn world, it's just a blog. Tiff will come back when she's ready and has the time to devote to it again. Absolutely anything could be keeping her from updating. I doubt she's just abandoned it altogether.
god, give her a break. this blog has shot up in popularity, certainly...go back and check out some of her entries when she first started it...hardly the amount of comments she gets now. i'll bet that while tiff appreciates acquiring a mass of new readers, the pressure from whiners is off-putting...get a grip guys. she'll come back when she comes back.
Yeah, there's nothing that makes a person want to come back to maintaining a blog in their spare time like constant whining and unwarranted bitching.
Please chill out angry commenters. She'll come back when she can/wants to. Anything posted to this blog is really a favor to her readers -- she doesn't owe us anything.
yeah, guys, be nice! Tiff probably has a life, unlike many of you, so maybe she's just busy. she could be busy climbing the corporate ladder at her job, or maybe christmas shopping, or reviewing a bunch of books so she can post them all at once. either way, BE PATIENT!!!!!! gawd!
p.s.: teehee, my word verification thing was "juffmnaw" ;D
"juffmnaw" sounds like something the ghostwriters would have written for "Claud speaking with her mouth full of Twinkies while searching for pretzels for Stacey and Dawn under the bed" dialogue. hehe.
That is soooo right! Spoken like like a true fan. :)
Hm, sorry for the stutter in my last comment, lol.
hey do you think the ghostwriters got the ideas for what the BSCers should say in mid-chew from these word verification things? teehee! mine is 'enyawly'.
I think they do. Some of these word verifications are hilarious. For example, using my word veri phrase, the BSC writers might come up with this...
"Lniiip! Lniiip!" shouted Kristy, as we all dove for the phone at the same time. What she meant to say, of course, was 'Let me answer it!" but we couldn't understand her because her mouth was full of ring dings and Mallomars from Claudia's crazy stash that her parents totally don't know about.
Claud's parents TOTALLY had to have known about the candy. Are we to believe that she never comes downstairs with Oreo crumbs in her teeth? Or that she has never, not once, been caught taking candy up to her room? And what about the time she did that candy art exhibit with the child genius in her garage?? Surely that woulda tipped them off...
Plus, you would think that she would have the world's biggest ant problem in her room, what with stuffing Oreos under her bed and potato chips in her closet. In the summer she would have ants all over the place. The room would be crawling
my veriphrase: gzvye
This, of course, would have been the name of an imaginary friend of Claire Pike.
Oh COME ON! As soon as I posted my last comment my new veriphrase was dagwafe, which led to another claire pike thing - remember how she called her parents moozie and daggles or something equally as stupid?
Yeah...
I absolutely love this blog, I have been reading it now for quite some time without posting, and I miss you Tiff too! However, if she has decided to stop posting, I'm sure any one of us will start up a blog of our own, Besides...Life can be quite hectic around this time of year, right? Rereading posts still makes me piss my pants laughing...
You know in one of the really early Claudia books, Janine actually admits that she also keeps candy hidden in her room. I find it hard to believe, based on the later books, but their parents had to know if they were both doing it.
Re Tiff being too busy to post - it's funny, but this has coincided perfectly with a really important exam I've got coming up this Sunday. Since I'm terrible at resisting the urge to go look at stuff like this (especially since this blog is so damn funny) it's actually been good that I've had one less temptation lately.
And to the people complaining about coming and checking back for nothing - come on, it takes like two seconds. If you use the same computer each time it even remembers the URL. All I have to do is type like "cl", hit enter on the address it brings up, and if there's no update I just go look at a different site instead. Very quick, painless, unstrenuous process. It's not like you walked two miles uphill in the snow JUST TO READ TIFF'S BLOG.
@ anonymous at 10:18 - you are so right. As someone who used to sneak candy in my room, all it takes is for your mum or dad to come up to your room while you're eating and one of the following scenarios will happen:
a) Your mum/dad walks in and catches you in the act, or
b) Your mum/dad knocks on your door, you reply with *looks at verification code* "Pvkiov" and take a suspiciously long time to open the door.
And what if you're having a conversation with your parents in your room and they ask to see something that you keep in the same place as your candy stash? If there's a way to handle that without looking totally suspicious, I don't know it.
And yet, I never thought about it in terms of Claudia until you mentioned it.
I have a secret compartment in my desk (its like 12 inches volume. Maybe) and I used to keep candy in there . . . it actually worked when it was sealed. I left some unsealed stuff in there once and the room was crawling with ants. . .
Remember when one of the kids had an imaginary friend named Gonzie? I think Ipici (word verification) would have been her sister...
^That'd be Gozzie Kunka, I think Marilyn Arnold created her as her imaginary friend.
Ah yes, Gonzie Kunka, which NOBODY THOUGHT MIGHT BE IMAGINARY.
Wasn't s/he like, the child of a dignitary or something else equally stupid? And, considering how friggen involved in EVERYONE'S lives all these girls were, would they not have known this?
My veriphrase is "tumem." I can't think of anything good, but I'm sure one of your snarktastic asses could.
Mine sounds like the STD you know Stacey got: Vzokes
I'm so glad I started this!!! Wooo! btw, mine is deptyg. Oh, and they didnt just say stuff in Claud's room. Even at lunch, they talked with full mouths. I remember when they were all talking about that one girl who was in the royal family (i think they were eating breakfast on a europe vacay for school at this time) and they said something about her house. Kristy was all "Ishpobbiapashushum" and everyone said "whaaaaat?" and it turned out that she said "it's probably just a palace or something." wtf? ok. i think i've got it. it's=ish, pobbia=probably a, pash=palace, ashum=or something. but she dropped the 'just', and wouldn't something be shomfing? she totally forgot the second half of the word!
p.s. my comment didnt go through, so my new word is iozotlr
mine is zewhskio. it sounds like they met a "hot guy" and the ghostwriters tried to give him a foreign-sounding last name. maybe they would say it like ZOW-skee-oh (cuz when you try to say zew, it sounds like zow?)
mine is dimcwty. hmmm...what can y'all come up with for that??
"dimcwty" . . . how Claudia would spell dimwitty.
Mine's ouwssii, which sounds like another food one...
Mine is "Litip" which sounds like it could be the last name of one of the BSC's clients. From their ever-expanding client base. Seriously, just how many families moved to the 'Brook over the course of the series?
Jessi and Claudia reached for the phone at the same time, but Jessi used one of her graceful dance moves to reach over Claud, which was a good thing considering Claudia's mouth was full of a combination of Red Vines and Oreos. "Baby-sitter's club, this is Jessi!" she answered.
Jessie talked to her for a minute, and we could all tell it was a new client. When she hung up we all looked at her with anticipation.
"it's a new client," said Jessi, "Mrs. Litip. They have identical quadruplets, girls."
We all squeed - we'd never sat for quadruplets before! How would we tell them apart? Would this be another situation like Marilyn and Carolyn Arnold?
"When do they need a sitter?" asked Kristy.
"Every Thursday night for the next three months."
Everyone looked at Mary-Ann to see who was available. "Everyone is free."
Ok, I'm done. Somebody else ought to continue.
Hehe, now this blog is worth coming back to just for the comments -- though I too am looking forward to Tiff's return!
My word? Get this: yfgnmm. Seriously. That can only be a talking-through-a-mouthful-of-junk word. I need a cooler one so I can be more creative!
what are Red Vines?
"mmzfo" - another!
*offers up her word verification thingy of "nimrlgx" to you all*
Mine sucks. :[ It's 'xbpzbui'.
Mine is "abbulz" which is, of course, how Claudia spells "apples"
yfgnmm - that CLEARLY says, "you're free that night mary anne"
mine is ugvspik. it sounds like some weird language that the kids would make up, like twin-talk but maybe for the whole 'brook. of course, they'd go the whole book without realizing that all the kids were just speaking random noises and not actually understanding anything each other said.
haha mine is pdtwiz. it has so much potential, but i have a creativity block. what does pdtwiz mean, and what context should we put it in?
my verify word is vltutu. hmmmm...it says tutu, like ballet, but Jessi can't talk with her mouth full because she doesn't eat. Is anyone else concerned with the facct that she's 11 and is already dieting and worrying about how she'll get fat if she even smells a twinkie? whatever. it must be claud asking jessi if she can borrow her tutu to rip/paint on or something.
it's crazy how many of us check this thing every day! mine is shobrver, which of course is some BSC nickname for sabrina bouvier, who appeared in 2 different books as completely different people.
do we think tiff gets e-mail notifications when we comment? if so, she probably thinks we're trying to get her to cave in and post a new blog. :)
